How to Paint a Room Like a Pro (Even If You’re Not One!)

There’s something so satisfying about giving a room a fresh coat of paint. It’s one of those projects that instantly makes your home feel cleaner, brighter, and totally renewed — all without spending a fortune. Over the years (and many paint-covered weekends later), I’ve learned that a few key tools and tricks can make a huge difference in both how your paint looks and how much you enjoy the process.
Here’s how I tackle painting a room from start to finish — and trust me, if I can do it without making a huge mess, you can too!
Step 1: Prep, Prep, Prep!
Before the fun begins, you’ll want to make sure your space is ready to go. Move furniture out or to the center of the room to get it out of the way. I also like to tape off trim and remove outlet covers to keep things clean — even though I’ve gotten a little braver with that over time.
Then, give your walls a quick wipe-down to remove dust and grime. Paint sticks best to clean surfaces! Patch any holes, sand smooth, and you’re officially ready to roll (pun intended).
Step 2: Gather Your Painting Essentials
Here’s my go-to list:
Paint (obviously!)
Paint roller and tray
Painter’s tape
Angled brush for corners
Drop cloths
Paint trimmer tool — seriously one of my favorites!
Extension rod for the roller
That paint trimmer tool deserves its own moment. It’s a total game-changer for clean lines and corners. No more stressing over wobbly edges or spending forever taping off every single area. Just glide it along and boom — perfectly crisp lines that look like a pro did them. Get your own here: https://amzn.to/4hCF0M7. You won't regret it!
Step 3: Cutting In (Without Losing Your Mind)
Normally, “cutting in” — painting those tight edges near the ceiling or trim — is the part everyone dreads. But with my trusty paint trimmer tool, it’s actually kind of fun. It keeps everything neat and tidy, and it saves so much time. I used to avoid painting days because of all that prep work, but this little tool makes the whole process smoother (and more satisfying).
Step 4: Time to Roll!
Once your edges are done, grab that roller and start painting in a “W” or “M” motion to spread the paint evenly. Here’s where my other favorite tool comes in — the extension rod.
If you’ve ever climbed up and down a ladder all day, you’ll appreciate this one! With an extension rod, you can easily reach tall walls and ceilings without breaking your back. It also helps you keep consistent pressure on the roller, so your walls end up with a smoother, more even finish. Plus, you’ll feel a little like a paint ninja when you can reach every corner with ease. Grab my favorite extension rod: https://amzn.to/4oKh4bV
Step 5: Let It Dry and Admire Your Work
Once your paint has had time to dry, check for any missed spots or thin areas and do a quick touch-up if needed. Then, peel off that painter’s tape (my favorite part!) and enjoy your newly transformed space.
Step 6: What’s Next
Painting is such a simple way to make a big change, and with the right tools — like my beloved paint trimmer and trusty extension rod — it doesn’t have to be intimidating.
If you’re curious to see these tools in action, stay tuned — my next YouTube video will feature the painting of a preteen’s room, and I’ll be sharing all the little tips and tricks that make the process so much easier (and fun!).
So grab a brush, cue up your favorite playlist, and let’s turn those blank walls into something beautiful. 🎨
